An electronic component is any physical entity in an electronic system used to affect the electrons or their associated fields in a manner consistent with the intended function of the electronic system. Components are generally intended to be connected together, usually by being soldered to a printed circuit board (PCB), to create an electronic circuit with a particular function.
For purchasing, this process starts when engineering sends them a bill of materials (BOM) for a new design.
To Start With: Bill of Materials (BOM)
A bill of materials (BOM) is a comprehensive list of the raw materials, sub-assemblies, intermediate assemblies, sub-components, parts, and the quantities of each required to create a product, as well as instructions required for gathering and using the required materials. It can be understood as the recipe and shopping list for creating a final product. The bill of materials usually appears in a hierarchical format, with bottom level showing individual components and materials and the highest level displaying the finished product. The bill of materials explains what, how, and where to buy required materials, and includes instructions for how to assemble the product from the various parts ordered.
Request for Quote(RFQ): What to provide?
Once you have completed your BOM, you are ready to move forward to request for quote(RFQ). A complete BOM should include essential items for PCB assemblers, including part number, manufacturer name, reference designator, quantity, description, case/package, SMT method, top/bottom, points/footprint, and BOM level.

Passive Components that are capable of affecting the flow of an electrical current, but don’t generate, amplify or control it.
The passive component provides attenuation of an electrical signal instead of generation or amplification. It consumes energy but doesn’t produce or control it. Resistors, capacitors, inductors and transformers are the main passive components used in electronics.
Connectors, the electromechanical devices used to establish electrical connections or optical coupling between circuits.
Connectors are present in almost all electrical applications, they are used in power, telecommunications, audio, video, computing, embedded systems, automation, transportation, ATE systems and lightning applications just to name a few. Connections may be permanent or removable. In every coupling there is generally a "female" (socket, receptacle) and a "male" (plug) that mate together. In their internal construction connectors are formed by contacts or terminals and a dielectric which are held together by the connector’s package or case.
Circuit Protection Components
The circuit protection device is an electrical device used for preventing an unnecessary amount of current. Circuit protection device can become damaged to save other components of the electrical circuit. Circuit protection devices can be either semiconductor (like TVS diodes, circuit protection ICs, etc.) or non-semiconductor (like fuses, PTC Resettable Fuses, gas discharge tubes, etc.)
